Sydney Schaefer: Finding Connection Through Action

In 2024, Sydney was looking for a way to get involved in her community. She wanted something local, meaningful, and flexible enough that her 8-year-old daughter could be part of it too.

As she explored volunteer opportunities, she learned more about Tempe Community Action Agency and felt connected to the values behind its work. Of all the ways to get involved, Neighbors Helping Neighbors stood out most, and Sydney and her daughter were matched with Teresita.

Since then, Teresita has become a familiar and welcome presence in Sydney’s life. Their visits may include helping with technology, picking up groceries, checking in, or simply spending time together. For Sydney, those moments of connection are what makes volunteering so meaningful.

Volunteering has also given Sydney a new perspective. At a time when so much can feel divided or overwhelming, it has helped her stay grounded and connected to the people around her.

“Volunteering for me is a reminder that there’s more than work,” she said. “I think it keeps me grounded and gives me perspective in a time where I need that.”

Through her time, care, and willingness to show up, Sydney is helping create a stronger community for Teresita and others. Her story is a reminder that meaningful change often begins with something simple: a visit, a conversation, a grocery trip, or the decision to get involved.
