Mother’s Day in Mexico, known as "Día de las Madres," is celebrated annually on May 10th. This special day serves to honor mothers and the invaluable role of motherhood, reflecting the profound respect and love that Mexicans hold for their mothers. The tradition of celebrating Mother’s Day here at our program was introduced by our Health Start moms 17 years ago, and it has become a cherished event in our community.
The influence of Día de las Madres has significantly enriched our celebration, emphasizing the universal love and gratitude for mothers that transcends cultural boundaries. This year, we were delighted to have the food provided by Rosita's Fine Mexican Food.
The festivities included engaging activities such as Lotería, which is akin to Mexican Bingo, as well as games like "What's in Your Purse?" and "Mexican Sayings." Each mother received a lovely purse filled with makeup from Shoe Bags Ministry, with a total of 45 bags distributed to our participants. Additionally, we created goodie bags as prizes, made possible by a generous makeup donation from Target.
The purpose of this celebration is not only to honor our mothers but also to foster a sense of belonging within our community. The influence of Día de las Madres continues to enrich our gathering, reminding us of the universal love and appreciation we share for mothers across various cultures, and reinforcing the importance of community and connection among our moms.
