Randy Dietrich: A Volunteer Whose Deliveries Go Far Beyond a Meal

For Randy Dietrich, volunteering has become more than a commitment. As he puts it, “It has become a very important part of my everyday life.” His journey into service began years ago during his career at Salt River Project, where a close friend served on TCAA’s board. When that friend stepped down, he encouraged Randy to join the board himself. That introduction planted a seed, but Randy didn’t yet know how significant the organization would become in his life.

Everything shifted when he retired in the spring of 2008. Looking for something meaningful that would allow him to give back directly, he remembered his connection to TCAA. Randy knew he wanted to do work that felt rewarding, personal, and rooted in community. That intention led him to volunteer with Meals on Wheels program, where he began delivering meals to seniors across the community.

He chose this work because he wanted to help someone face-to-face, to be present in moments that matter. Over the years, he has met countless clients and built relationships that continue to shape the way he sees the world.

One client in particular stays close to Randy’s heart. They developed a warm connection over time, sharing small conversations and simple moments during each delivery. After the client passed away, his wife reached out specifically to tell Randy how much her husband appreciated the days when Randy brought his meals. That message left a lasting impact. It serves as a reminder of why Randy continues to show up, week after week, year after year.

For Randy, volunteering opens a window into the varied and sometimes challenging circumstances people face. He sees resilience, loneliness, humor, gratitude, and everything in between. Those experiences fuel him. They deepen his motivation to keep helping and to keep showing up for the people who rely on the program.

After so many years, he remains grateful for the chance to serve, to connect, and to offer kindness in ways that might seem small but carry real weight. In every meal he delivers, Randy brings more than food. He brings presence. He brings compassion. And he brings a steady commitment to strengthening the community, one doorstep at a time.
