A Meaningful Match: From Connection to Community

After the loss of her spouse, Teresita has continued to live independently, drawing on her strength
and resilience. A former employee of Arizona State University, she hoped to find a way to stay
socially connected with someone who shared similar interests, while also receiving a bit of help
with light tasks and navigating technology.
Through the matching program, Teresita was paired with Sydney, a current employee at Arizona
State University. From their very first meeting, the connection was clear. What began as a simple
match quickly grew into a meaningful friendship built on shared experiences and genuine
companionship.
Today, Teresita regularly spends time with Sydney, as well as Sydney’s family and their dog.
Whether they’re talking, laughing, or simply enjoying each other’s company, their visits have
become something both look forward to. For Teresita, this connection has brought a renewed
sense of joy and belonging. For Sydney, the relationship has been equally rewarding.
Their story reflects the heart of the program: creating opportunities for connection that go beyond
basic support. Relationships like these help older adults stay socially engaged, which plays a
critical role in maintaining mental health and overall wellbeing. By fostering companionship and
community, the program not only enhances quality of life but also helps reduce feelings of
isolation and depression.
Teresita and Sydney’s friendship is a powerful reminder that meaningful connections can happen
at any stage of life, and that sometimes, the right match can make all the difference.
