When you’ve been on the receiving end of help, you know just how much it matters.
That’s what makes this volunteer’s story so powerful.
In just one month, Mark has given over 56 hours of his time to support TCAA’s food pantry — helping sort, pack, and distribute groceries to neighbors facing food insecurity. But it’s not just about the hours. It’s about the heart behind them.
“I go to foodbanks for myself,” he shared. "I want to give back.”
Living nearby and looking for a way to stay connected, Mark found TCAA — and more than just a volunteer opportunity. He found community.
A Welcoming Space for Everyone
Volunteering can come with challenges, especially for those navigating barriers. As someone who’s visually impaired and currently unemployed, Mark was thoughtful about choosing a place that would work with him — not around him.
“I’m not working right now, and with my vision, it’s hard to find the right fit,” he said.
“But volunteering keeps me active. It gives me a sense of community and purpose.”
That sense of belonging started right away, thanks in part to Bella, TCAA’s Volunteer Coordinator.
“She’s so helpful and accommodating. With my visual impairment, scheduling can be hard — but Bella makes it work. She’s amazing.”
More Than a Shift — It’s a Connection
Though he holds a peer support license, traditional office work hasn’t felt like the right fit. But the food pantry? That’s where he shines. In the hustle of the pantry floor — helping load carts, sort produce, and brighten someone’s day — he’s found a rhythm that feels right.
“TCAA is a great organization. I’ve seen nothing but positive here. I’d recommend it to anybody.”
When we asked Mark to describe his experience in one word, he didn’t miss a beat.
“Awesome-sauce.”
And honestly, we couldn’t agree more.
At TCAA, we know volunteering is more than filling a shift. It’s about showing up for others — and often, finding yourself in the process. Whether you’ve got one hour or one hundred, there’s a role for you here.
Our programs run on compassion and community. And we’re proud to create space for volunteers of all abilities to contribute, connect, and thrive.
