Third Annual Wild & Scenic Environmental Film Festival

Tempe Community Action Agency & The Arizona Wilderness Coalition (AWC) co-hosted the Third Annual Wild & Scenic Environmental Film Festival on Thursday, May 20.

This event was a huge success for TCAA!  More than 160 diverse people attended the event, from students to retirees, all of whom learned about TCAA's work and goals.

The purpose of TCAA co-hosting this environmentally-themed festival was to raise awareness about the connections between food issues, social justice, and environmental sustainability.  As TCAA looks to seek out healthier, fresher foods for our clients, the films in this festival highlighted why it is important for all members of our community to have access to healthy foods.

Some of the comments we received about this year's festival:
"It was not only entertaining and informative, but most of all inspirational."
"Thank you for keeping our minds going on new ideas and providing me with this wonderful opportunity!"
"The program and films were wonderful (especially the STRAW project!), and the people were great."

A special thanks to our sponsors:

Republic Services
Friends of Sonoran Desert
National Monument
The Anza Trail Coalition.

 And our festival's organizers:

Girl Scout Troop #1174 Serves I-HELP Through Community Service Projects

Many thanks to Meg Webster and Girl Scout Troop #1174 for organizing a very successful towel drive for TCAA's Interfaith Homeless Emergency Lodging Program (I-HELP) and Tempe Leadership Class XXV "Shower Power Project."  Troop #1174 is a group of 25 girls ranging from ages 5 to 16, based out of Bethany Learning Center and Bethany Christian School.  The troop set a goal of collecting 100 towels, and ended up collecting a total of 134 towels, see troop pictured below.  These towels are being distributed to various homeless outreach ministries and I-HELP host sites.

Way to go Troop #1174 for doing such a valuable community service project.  Thanks for all the hard work and efforts you put towards organizing this valuable community service drive!

Before ever doing the towel drive Meg Webster lead Troop #1174 in volunteering their time and resources serving  I-HELP guests dinner.  The troop coordinated and cooked an I-HELP meal on March 28 at Bethany Community Church.  They also donated lunch items and packed lunches for I-HELP guests to take with them the following morning.  To top it off they organized  a "Gifts of Sharing" project collecting and donating 70 boxes of Girl Scout cookies to I-HELP guests.  This meant a great deal to I-HELP guests who thoroughly enjoyed the cookies, some happily packed whole boxes to take with them.  For more information on TCAA,      I-HELP, and our many other valuable programs please

AGN Volunteer Delivers More Than Just Food For HDM Clients Four-Legged Family Members

Animal Guardian Network (AGN) volunteer Dennis Peterson makes monthly pet deliveries for about 30 of our Home Delivered Meal (HDM) clients.  This effort is coordinated through the Home-Delivered Meals, and the Feed in Need programs.  Dennis volunteers about 15 hours a month making these deliveries, and has earned the title "Canine Case Manager" from AGN.  Many of the senior clients only have their pets, which makes these deliveries all the more special. The service is about more than just delivering food, he helps HDM clients who cannot leave their home keep their special family members.  Thank you Dennis and the many other volunteers at AGN that give HDM clients a piece of mind knowing their pet(s) will never go hungry.
